Most of its exteriors are post-war capes and ranches, where the painted work is trim, doors, soffits and fascia rather than whole clapboard elevations.

## The exception to Plainville's mid-century rule

Plainville is overwhelmingly a post-war town — only 808 of its 8,588 homes predate 1940 — but it holds a genuinely delicate exterior painting environment.

The New Haven District Campground, listed on the National Register in 1980, is a 17-acre Methodist camp-meeting settlement founded in 1865. Nineteen two-story cottages survive, ringing The Circle, and the nomination describes them precisely: built on brick stilts with no foundations, with tongue-and-groove siding, decorative shingles, pierced and sawn-wood trim, decorative lattice- and stick-work on the porches and gables, and wide double doors.

That is fine, thin, highly worked wood on small buildings that have stood for well over a century without conventional foundations. Almost every rule that makes a modern exterior job efficient is wrong there. Pressure is wrong. Aggressive mechanical sanding across sawn detail is wrong. The work is slow, hand-led, and worth doing properly.

For most Plainville homeowners the job is the opposite — a straightforward cape or ranch where the painted surfaces are trim and the siding may be aluminum. We are happy to quote either, and we do not price them the same way.
