## Why is a deck the easiest thing to ruin with a pressure washer?

Because decking is softwood, laid flat, and takes the full force of anything aimed at it. Pressure that a masonry wall shrugs off will tear the soft early wood out from between the harder grain lines on a pressure-treated or cedar board, leaving a surface that feels furry underfoot and never takes stain evenly again.

The damage is also close to invisible while it is happening. A deck being over-washed looks clean and wet; the raised grain only announces itself once it dries, by which point the board has lost material permanently.

So we wash decks at the pressure the board can take, and we treat washing as the step before refinishing rather than as the refinishing itself. Deck refinishing is separate work with its own preparation, and a deck washed correctly is far easier to refinish well.

The same logic applies to fences, to shingle siding, and to any painted wood that has been out in Connecticut weather for a few decades. Washing is a cleaning step ahead of a coating step, not a paint-removal method.
