## What makes a Waterbury exterior different from a suburban one?

Three things, and they are all consequences of the brass era. First, scale: the wood triple-decker. The New Haven Preservation Trust names Waterbury as one of Connecticut's four principal triple-decker cities and describes the type precisely — a narrow, freestanding, three-story rectangular wooden box, built from the late 1800s to the end of the First World War. About 17.6% of the city's housing still sits in two-to-four unit buildings. Three full stories of clapboard and three tiers of porch is a different job from a ranch.

Second, detail. Triple-deckers built between the 1880s and 1900 carry Queen Anne scroll-sawn brackets and decorative shingle courses; the later ones, from the 1900s to the 1920s, are plainer Colonial Revival clapboard. The National Register's Hillside district — 398 contributing buildings on the slope above downtown, developed between 1840 and 1920 — is overwhelmingly Queen Anne. Its neighbor on Burnt Hill, the Overlook district, is predominantly Colonial Revival across 494 contributing buildings from roughly 1890 to 1930.
