What is downtown Meriden actually made of?
A remarkably mixed fabric, and it changes what a repaint involves from one building to the next. The Colony Street and West Main Street Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1987, covers 11.5 acres in the heart of downtown — 38 buildings, 31 of them contributing, built between roughly 1850 and 1940.
The nomination catalogues Gothic Revival and Italianate; Neo-Grec, Romanesque Revival, Renaissance Revival and Victorian vernacular; Neo-Classical Revival, Georgian Revival and Tudor Revival; and three Art Deco and Art Moderne buildings on Colony Street from the 1920s boom. It also records terra-cotta friezes and cornices, skilled bricklaying and important roof lines — and notes that most of these buildings have been altered with newer storefronts.
That last point is the practical one. A downtown Meriden commercial elevation is frequently two buildings in one: an original masonry upper facade with terra-cotta detail, and a much later storefront at street level. They are different substrates, in different condition, wanting different preparation and often different coatings. Quoting them as a single wall area is how a job goes wrong.

Masonry painting and concrete sealing are part of what we do, and downtown Meriden has a lot of both. The important conversation on decorative masonry and terra-cotta is whether it should be painted at all — some historic masonry is better cleaned and left, because coating it can trap moisture in the material. We will give you a straight answer on that before quoting the work.
Can you work around our opening hours?
Yes, and for retail, restaurant and medical premises it is usually the only workable approach. Tell us your trading hours and access constraints at the estimate and they go into the quote rather than becoming a problem mid-job.
Do you do storefront repaints on older buildings?
Regularly. Most downtown Meriden storefronts are later insertions into much older masonry facades, so the storefront itself is often modern material even where the building above is nineteenth century. That usually makes the street-level work more straightforward than the facade above it — but it does mean two specifications on one elevation.
