Why does exposure vary so much across Meriden?
Because of the topography. Meriden is built around and below a traprock ridge — the same ridge that carries Castle Craig, the stone tower dedicated in 1900 above Hubbard Park. Hubbard Park itself covers 1,803 acres and extends into Southington and Berlin, and the Olmsted Brothers were involved in its landscape work.
A ridge does two things to an exterior finish. It changes wind loading, so wind-driven rain hits some elevations far harder than a flat-lot average would predict. And it changes shade: houses on the east side of a ridge lose the sun earlier, stay damp longer after rain, and grow mildew on elevations that on another street would dry out by mid-morning.
The practical consequence is that a Meriden house rarely wears evenly. It is common to find a south or west elevation chalking and failing while a sheltered side still looks sound, and the right specification treats them differently rather than averaging across the building. We look at each elevation before quoting, which is also why we do not price exterior work by square footage alone.
Meriden exterior painting questions
One side of my house always looks worse. Do I have to repaint all of it?
Not necessarily, and it is a fair question to ask before committing to a whole-house price. Uneven wear is normal in Meriden because of the ridge — exposure genuinely differs elevation to elevation. Sometimes the right answer is a full repaint for colour consistency; sometimes it is remedial work on the failing elevations and a wash elsewhere. We will tell you which, and price both if it helps you decide.
Will pressure washing take the old paint off?
No. We do not strip paint with pressure washing. Washing is a cleaning step that removes dirt, grime and contaminants so the new coating can bond; failing paint is removed afterwards by hand and tool. Aiming high pressure at loose paint on older wood drives water into the joints and damages the substrate you are paying to preserve.
Do historic district rules limit my colour choice?
Connecticut law says colour is outside that process. CGS section 7-147d(c) states that local historic district provisions shall not be construed to extend to the colour of paint used on the exterior of any building or structure. Separately, National Register listing — which is what Meriden's Colony Street and West Main Street district carries — places no colour restriction on a private owner at all.
