Why does precision manufacturing turn up in a town this size?
Because of one man. Charles Hotchkiss Norton was born in Plainville in 1851, started at fifteen as a chore boy at the Seth Thomas Clock Company, rose to manage its tower-clock department, and went on to invent the heavy-duty precision grinding machine.
